Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
This weekend we enter into the last period of Lent, traditionally called Passiontide, as we focus more directly on the sufferings of Christ leading into Holy Week.  This will culminate liturgically with the celebration of the Paschal Mystery – the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ – in the Sacred Paschal Triduum culminating on Easter Sunday on 20 April.  These three days are the most important and sacred time for Catholics and, if at all possible, we are expected to take part in the Liturgies of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday evening, the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday afternoon and – the most important Liturgy of the whole Church Year – the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening.  Now is the time to make plans to take part in these Liturgies in a week and a half’s time.  The Parish Diary at the back of the Newsletter this weekend gives the schedule for all the Liturgies of Holy Week.

This Sunday, the Fifth Sunday of Lent, is the last before the beginning of Holy Week next week with Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.  It presents us with the Gospel story of the woman caught in adultery and Christ’s teaching that he has not come to condemn but to enable individuals to be transformed by his forgiveness and love and, as the Prophet Isaiah tells us, to look forward not backwards: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.  Behold, I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah43:18-19a).  St Paul exclaims his desire to undertaken this journey of transformation himself in the Second Reading: “For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I can gain Christ and be found in him…that I may know him and the power of his resurrection…Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own” (Philippians 3:8a-9a, 10, 15). Rather than condemn others then, we are invited to look honestly at and within ourselves to see our own sins and failings, thereby realising that all of us are imperfect – none of us is free from sin – and therefore none of us should stand in judgement of others: “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7a).  In light of this, to provide another occasion to confess our sins and to receive sacramental absolution, this week there will be a time to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance on Thursday evening between 6.00-7.00pm at St Andrew’s.

Before we enter into the solemn and sacred time of Holy Week next weekend, we are having a Parish Family Fun Bingo Evening this coming Friday at 7.00pm in St Andrew’s Hall.  The details of the evening are attached to the Newsletter.  I look forward to seeing you there.
Along with the Newsletter this week are attached:
  • the weekly guide, from Monika Manser, to help with a contemplative reading of the Sunday Gospel

As the world faces new and potentially destabilising challenges following the acts of the President of the United States this past week, let us be aware of those around us who will be most affected by these changes, both within our community and in the local community around us, and provide whatever support we can.  We are always called to witness to the values of the Gospel which, as Pope Francis is reminding us in this Jubilee Year, includes being a Pilgrim of Hope, not a prophet of despair. Above all, we should be holding these uncertain times in prayer, remembering that in the Spirit our faith connects us closely with all people and all places across the world, and our prayer is powerful as we intentionally unite ourselves in love, justice and unity with people of faith around the Earth.
We continue also to pray for those members of our community who are vulnerable, sick or dying, and for their loved ones.
May God bless you with the gifts of serenity and trust.

Assisted Suicide

The important vote for all MPs on the assisted suicide legislation, known as the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, is likely to take place on 25 April. The charity Right to Life UK has a simple online mechanism to allow people to contact their Member of Parliament and it only takes a few moments to submit a message to ask an MP to stop assisted suicide being rushed into law. It can be accessed here: https://righttolife.org.uk/asvote. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, has issued a Pastoral Letter to all Catholics in our country to be read at Masses this weekend.

Pope’s Prayer Intention for April

During the month of April, our Holy Father Pope Francis invites us to join with him in praying for the use of the new technologies: “Let us pray that the use of the new technologies will not replace human relationships, will respect the dignity of the person, and will help us face the crises of our times”. To watch a video of Pope Francis introducing this prayer intention and to find more information about it, please go to https://thepopevideo.org/april-for-the-use-of-the-new-technologies/.

Diocesan Vacancy – Head of Caritas Diocese of Plymouth

The Head of Caritas Diocese of Plymouth plays a pivotal role in advancing the Church’s “Ministry of Charity” by leading social action initiatives that align with the Bishop’s vision. The role involves implementing strategic priorities in response to the evolving needs of the community, especially for people in vulnerable situations in our local communities including children, those who are older, people who are homeless or those seeking asylum or refuge. This is a hands-on role and the person must have a delivery-focussed attitude. The post is located at St Boniface House, Ashburton, Devon, but involves travel throughout the Diocese. The post is a permanent, full-time position, 35 hours per week with a salary of £45,000-£50,000 p.a. depending on experience. The closing date for applications is Sunday 27 April 2025.
