Parish Mass Book: page 148

The Apostles Creed – page 12

Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation II – page 39

Rediscover Jesus – An Invitation

An anonymous donor in the USA has gifted to the Diocese a large consignment of a book by Matthew Kelly, founder of Dynamic Catholic, whose mission is to redefine and reenergize the Catholic Church in America.

Our parish has been allocated 150 copies of his book REDISCOVERING JESUS.

The books are available today FREE. As copies are limited please take only one per household.

The book is divided into 40 easy bites (ideal for Lent’s 40 days), each offering a point to ponder, a verse to live, a question to consider and a prayer.

“Come home…I am waiting for you..”

Pope Francis has asked that our churches be ‘a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey’.

  • St James will be open on the following Friday evenings in Lent from 7.00 to 8.30pm: Feb 23rd, March 2nd, 16th, 23rd.
  • St Boniface will be open on the following Tuesdays in Lent from 11.15am to 12.00: Feb 20th, 27th, March 6th, 13th, 20th.

This will be a period of prayerful silence in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

A priest will be available at the same time for individual private Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).

Everything Belongs – Journey in Faith

A Lent course based on the book Everything Belongs –  the Gift of Contemplative Prayer, by the renowned Franciscan Fr Richard Rohr, where he challenges people to see anew, to move beyond the comfort of a settled life toward an understanding of themselves rooted in their connection to God.

Tuesday afternoons at 3.00pm in St James church hall: February 20th and 27th, March 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.

Anyone wanting to know more can ring Barbara on 01398 331823. Books can be borrowed from the Journey in Faith base in the hall, or by arrangement.

CAFOD  Lent Fast Day:  ‘Miss a meal, so a family can eat’

This week Cafod invites us to fast, pray and give in the collection next weekend 24/25th in order to help fund Cafod aid projects.

The green envelopes for your contribution are available in the church porch for collection today.

Alpha Course

We have recently received our advertising literature for ALPHA. So the banners will be going up soon and the invitation will be available.

The banners and the invitations make ref to alpha.org and point to our own web site stjameschurchtiverton.org.uk.

Today: Sunday 6 in Ordinary Time (B)

Parish Mass Book: page 137

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes & World Day of Prayer for the sick.

Today is also a Day of Prayer for the Unemployed

Ash Wednesday: this week 14 February

“Lent is the time to start breathing again.

It is the time to open our hearts to the breath of God

who can turn our dust and ashes to humanity.”                                                             Pope Francis

Holy Mass with blessing and marking with ashes:

  • 10.00am at St James
  • 12.00 at St Boniface
  • 7.30pm at St James

Ash Wednesday in our Catholic tradition is a day of fasting & abstinence.

We are invited to eat less food and abstain from meat – as a measure of self-discipline, in empathy with the passion of Jesus, in solidarity with our brothers and sisters world-wide who have no choice but to go hungry.

Lourdes Pilgrimage Collection

Bishop Mark has asked us to contribute today to the Lourdes fund. This is to help very ill people, who couldn’t otherwise afford it, to join the pilgrimage to seek healing of body, soul and spirit, under Our Lady’s protection.

Please spare what you can and give to the retiring collection

This weekend we are keeping Homeless Sunday

Sunday is the anniversary of the ordination of Bishop Mark in 2014

Saturday is Holocaust Memorial Day

Homeless Sunday

Homeless Sunday is the opportunity to pray, reflect and plan practical action on homelessness, to offer solidarity and be a voice for change. Visit: www.housingjustice.org.uk

I have asked Ali Padfield, Hub manager of  CHAT, to speak about this growing problem at Masses at St James and St Boniface this weekend. Fr Paul.

  • Our church, as you know, along with others churches in Tiverton, supports CHAT. As we prepare to build a new church it’s all the more urgent that we support people with housing issues in Mid Devon.

Unwanted Gifts Sale – at St James

Thank you to those of you looking for a home for the jumper or socks you will never wear and items you will never use – for bringing them to church to sell and raise money for the New Church Building Fund!

Sale in the hall before and after Mass this weekend.

Palms for Ashes

Lent is fast approaching! Ash Wednesday is on 14 February and last year’s palm crosses are needed to burn for the ashes blessed and imposed on that day. If you still have and can find old palm crosses please don’t throw them away but bring them to church and leave them in the appropriate basket marked  ‘palms for ashes’

Epiphany Extravaganza Concert

The proceeds from ticket sales and donations for the cakes and charities raised an amazing total of £683 – to be shared between the New Church Building Fund and the charity Young Minds (supporting mental health among young people).

On behalf of all the delighted audience and consumers, I’d like to thank the performers, young and not so young (who all of course gave their talents free), the organisers (especially Bridget the amazing conductor), the ladies who served teas, and the donors and bakers of delicious cakes which were either eaten before or purchased after the concert, adding to the general satisfaction, not least of the children!   Fr Paul.

Candlemas Day

Friday this week 2nd February is the feast of the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple, when Simeon and Anna recognised the child as the ‘Light to enlighten the nations’.

Blessing of Candles and Procession at the 12.00 midday Mass at St James    Parish Mass Book: page 295
