Message from Canon Kristian
Dear sisters and brothers
Whilst we are in desperate need of rain, I do hope you are all surviving the passage of Storm Austen and Storm Boelo. At the moment, St Boniface is without its roof tiles, as major repairs are being done to the underlying rotten woodwork, so I have been praying that the temporary plastic covering and wooden batons have withstood the high winds and the rain. For the most part this seems to have happened, like that biblical house founded in rock, but there has inevitably been some ingress of water. So be prepared for a bit of disruption when you come to church tomorrow. Hopefully, the worst is now passed and work on the roof can continue as soon as possible next week. Thanks to Anne Doble for keeping an eye on the church and for mopping up the water!
I am delighted that the Youth Club will be starting again next Saturday in St Boniface’s Hall. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters of the parish to get together for an hour and a half, to make friendships and play games and do other activities. Thanks to those who have volunteered to make this club available again on the last Saturday of each month from 11.00am-12.30pm.
The First Holy Communion preparation sessions will be starting on Saturday 7 November. More details will be sent out directly to parents in the near future, but please make a note of the start date.
You will see that we are looking to employ a cleaner for the church and complex at St John & St James. If you are interested, or you know someone who might be, please contact recruitment@prcdtr.org.uk for a job description and application form as soon as possible.
Along with the Newsletter this weekend, I attach:
Monika Manser’s weekly guide to a contemplative reading of the Sunday Gospel
an information sheet about ways to support the Catholic Children’s Society (Plymouth)
the Statement from the Patriarchs and Head of Churches in Jerusalem concerning the attack on Taybeh
a leaflet regarding the free Trama-informed Practice Safeguarding Training Day
a leaflet regarding the Advent Young Adults’ Retreat
Please remember that the clocks go back one hour tonight, otherwise you will be turning up to Mass an hour early tomorrow morning!
As always, let us reserve a special place in our prayers for the sick, the lonely and the vulnerable.
God bless and keep safe!
Canon Kristian
CAFOD COP31 Campaign
Ahead of the COP31 climate talks which begin on 9 November, help CAFOD make our voices heard by packing a virtual suitcase for Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh. Catholics across the country have already started adding symbolic items to the suitcase, representing the values and commitments we hope the UK government will take to the climate talks. COP31 in Türkiye comes at a critical moment. With global temperatures on track to exceed 1.5°C and eleven consecutive hottest years on record, the message is clear: action can’t wait. For Catholics, caring for our common home is more than a response to science. It’s a call of faith too. Will you add your item today to help ensure the Energy Secretary is sent off well prepared? Click here to pack the suitcase!
Youth Club
The Youth Club which meets in St Boniface Hall, Cullompton, will be restarting this coming Saturday, 31 October, 11.00am-12.30pm. All youngsters in the parish, 9-14 years old, are welcome. The Youth Club will usually meet on the last Saturday of each month.
Catholic Children’s Society (Plymouth)
Copies of the Catholic Children’s Society Newsletter, Children First, are available at church this weekend. Attached to this Newsletter is a flyer from the CCS(P) giving details of the many ways you can help raise much needed funds or become involved.
Plymouth CAST
Plymouth CAST is a Catholic multi-academy trust of 34 schools and 1 nursery, spanning the Diocese of Plymouth. Its mission is to be a community of outstanding schools in which all pupils flourish in safe, happy, and stimulating environments and leave with the knowledge and skills, personal qualities, and aspirations, to make the world a better place, inspired by the Gospel. CAST is looking to expand its Board of Directors and is especially interested in hearing from you if you have skills and current or recent experience in education at primary or secondary level, particularly within a multi-academy trust. Please contact the Clerk to the Trust Board for further information, Mrs Leah Paiano lpaiano@plymouthcast.org.uk.
Palestinian Support Group
A meeting of the Parish Palestinian Support Group will take place this Tuesday, 27 October, at 7.30pm in St John and St James. All welcome.
Condemnation of Attack on the Village of Taybeh
The patriarchs and heads of Churches in Jerusalem have issued a statement firmly condemning the “heinous attack” carried out on Saturday, October 17, by “masked settlers” in the Christian village of Taybeh. The attack targeted residents harvesting olives, as well as diplomats and officials from European countries who were visiting the area on a solidarity mission.
Tough Times Support Group
This month’s meeting of the Parish Tough Times Support Group will take place this coming Thursday, at 7.00pm in St Boniface’s Hall. Come along and find some friendship and support in whatever tough times you are going through!
Parish Altar Servers
We always need more altar servers, so any young person who has made their First Holy Communion is encouraged to come forward and offer themselves for this importance service for our community. It would be great to see youngsters from all the different cultural backgrounds in our parish represented on the altar. Please speak to Canon Kristian over the next couple of weeks and training can then be arranged.
Safeguarding Training Day
Bookings are still open and available to anybody wanting to attend the fast-approaching Trauma Informed Practice in Faith Settings Training Day on Saturday 31 October which will be held at the Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre. The day is an opportunity to strengthen your knowledge around being more trauma informed, and/or express your interest in becoming a Chaplain for Survivors! Lunch is included. If you would like to attend, please book a place at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1999689252384?aff=oddtdtcreator.
