Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
The election of Pope Leo XIV has given us a sense of the newness and hope that is an integral part of Christian faith and vision.  The rising of Christ, defeating sin and death, the fundamental proclamation of our faith and the universal offer of salvation, takes root and transforms the perspective we take with regards to the everyday reality of life, both on a personal level and on a communal one.  The readings from the Acts of the Apostles which we hear proclaimed on the Sundays of Eastertide recount the impact of this message on the lives of individuals and communities in the early days of the Church under the guidance and drive of the Holy Spirit, not least on those belonging to the gentile, non-Jewish world.  Those who were regarded as being “outside” of the people chosen by God, those who did not observe the rules and obligations of the Covenant, now discover that they too belong, that they too are children of God and that, as a result, their lives and future are completely transformed.  The Apostles, particularly St Paul, were the vehicles of the action of the life-giving Spirit beyond the borders of the early Church – borders which were presumed by some to be divinely-imposed.  They were truly “bridge-builders“, a primary role Pope Leo understands to be his over the coming years of his pontificate, building bridges and overcoming divisions within the Church and between the Church and peoples of different faiths and none across the world.
Whilst we are called to see and live the new life of the resurrection every day of our Christian lives, we are being invited this weekend also not to lose sight of the ultimate hope and joy of our faith – “a new heaven and a new earth” (cf Revelation 21:1) – the total transformation of God’s creation through the redeeming, self-sacrificing love of the Risen One, when Christ will make all things new and the “multitudes” of God’s created world will be one in Him, as the motto of Pope Leo proclaims (In Illo uno unum). However, we too have a role to play in this process of liberation, unity and transformation by living faithfully and perseveringly even in the face of opposition and rejection Jesus’ new commandment of love: “that love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love another” (cf John 13:34).  Far from being an invitation to be “nice” to others, it is a truly revolutionary principle of life which overturns much of the materialistic and self-serving approach of our modern world and political systems. The Christian proclamation of the resurrection and the love which underpins it and brings it about is truly “revolutionary”.  The well-known 1960’s hymn by Patrick Appleford, “O Lord, all the world belongs to you” reflects this ability of the love of God to make all things new – through forgiveness of wrongs, the love of enemies, the overcoming of the divisions between people, the challenging of wealth and power by servant-living and the universal gift of the Spirit: this love is truly “turning the world upside down“!
Along with the Newsletter this week, I attach:
  • the guide to a prayerful reading of this Sunday’s Gospel, from Monika Manser
  • some reflections from Canon Paul Cummins on Pope Leo XIV
  • information about the CAFOD Jubilee Reflection Day and Diocesan Launch of the Worldwide Church Debt Campaign
Please remember the sick and vulnerable members of our parish community.  I know that your prayers mean so much to them.
May God bless you all.

Reflections on Pope Leo from Canon Paul Cummins

Following his recent election, Pope Leo XIV will be formally installed as the 267th Successor of St Peter at a Mass in St Peter’s Square in Rome this Sunday morning. We will be joining our prayers for Pope Leo to the prayers of those gathered in Rome for this unique occasion.

Canon Paul Cummins, our Diocesan Administrator, has offered some inspiring reflections on Pope Leo XIV and these are attached to this Newsletter.

Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Sexual Abuse

The annual Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Abuse takes place this Tuesday, 20 May. The focus for this year’s day of prayer is the theme of “The Empty Chair”. Our thoughts are with those who are no longer present with us in our church gatherings because they have suffered abuse in a church setting and cannot face being here. They may also include the families or friends of survivors. They may perhaps be former members of a community affected by allegations or convictions for abuse. They may be people who are simply so disgusted or ashamed by what they have heard about abuse within the Church that they no longer want to be part of it. All these groups and others are represented by “The Empty Chair”.

If you have been impacted by abuse and would like to speak to someone, please contact the Safeguarding Office on 01364 645430 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.30pm).

Congratulations Honorary Citizen Sally!

Our parishioner, Sally Chapman, the President and Founder of CHAT, was honoured this week by Mayor Neal Davey and the Tiverton Town Council for her incredible contribution to the community. She was made an Honorary Citizen of the Town of Tiverton.

Back in 1995, Sally followed her calling to support people facing homelessness and poverty in Mid Devon, and that same passion continues to drive CHAT’s mission 30 years on. Many congratulations, Sally – what an inspiration you are!

Secular Clergy Fund Collection

This weekend the annual collection to support the Secular Clergy Fund takes place at all the Masses.
