Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
As we celebrate the annual Day for Life this Sunday, with its theme “The Wonder of the Child in the Womb”, I am sure we will all be holding in prayer all pregnant women and children, particularly in the war-torn and famine-struck areas of our world.  With our focus on the gift of life, we also cannot but focus on all those who were injured, some very seriously, in the train collision yesterday near Bedford and especially the driver who died in the accident.  Such events remind us that life is both precious and fragile, and something we should live fully every moment with a thankful and generous heart.
The Pilgrimage for Peace last Saturday, led by members of our parish Laudato Si’ Group, from St Boniface’s Shrine in Crediton to St Andrew’s Church in Tiverton, was a blessed time of prayer and companionship through the beauty of the Mid-Devon countryside.  It was a very hot day, so it is amazing that there was a core group of pilgrims who walked the whole 17 miles, joined for the various stages by others.  It was a joy to see parishioners, both young and old, taking part. The pilgrims were ably and generously sustained with food and drink at the end of each stage by a band of supporters, so much so that it was mooted that perhaps next year we should have a “fasting pilgrimage”!  Thank you to those who carefully planned and prepared this day.
With the mention of food, yesterday evening we held our “Pudding Evening” in St Andrew’s Hall, and what a wonderful array of puddings there were!  Over 50 people, again of all ages, came to enjoy community and to have a taste of the many delicious cakes, tarts, puddings and trifles on offer.  Our thanks go to all those who planned the evening and to those who made the puddings, which made it a great success.  All the proceeds will go the fit-out fund for the new church.
We have a big celebration next Sunday, when our children will be making their First Holy Communion at the 11.30am Mass in Tiverton.  Due to the number of children, their families and guests, seating will be limited at that Mass, so I would advise those who usually take part in this Mass either to arrive earlier than usual or to attend another Mass if you need a seat.  That said, it is always important that other members of our community be present and participating in this Mass, since the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion is not solely an individual act of faith and devotion, but also a sacramental action which binds us to, and expresses our union with, the gathered Church, the Body of Christ.  Let us have a special place in our prayer this week for these children and their families.
Along with the Newsletter this weekend, I attach:
  • the usual guide to a contemplative reading of the Sunday Gospel from Monika Manser
  • a poster with details about the upcoming production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” performed by St John’s Starmakers, a group of children from our parish school who, led and supported by Catherine Fitton, Helen Hewson, Elaine Kelly and a whole band of helpers, dedicate many hours of rehearsal time each year to produce these wonderful shows.  Our children never disappoint, so do go along and enjoy this year’s production, especially if you have never been before
  • a poster concerning the opening of the Lighthouse’s Courtyard Garden next Saturday, 27 June, as part of the Secret Gardens of Tiverton event.
We have been told that the temperature at the beginning of next week will be high, so please do take the necessary precautions to stay protected and hydrated, especially if you someone who likes being out in the sun!
May God bless you and the week ahead.

Day for Life

This Sunday, 21 June, we mark Day for Life, the day in the Church’s calendar when we come together to celebrate the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. This year’s theme is ‘The Wonder of the Child in the Womb’. A child is a gift from God to be nurtured and cherished, but the theme also recognises the tragedy of babies who died before birth and the grief experienced by their parents and families.

The Bishops’ message and prayers can be found on the website: www.dayforlife.org. The second collection will go towards the Day for Life Fund, which distributes grants to organisations that promote respect for life from conception until natural death. You can also donate online on the Day for Life website.

First Holy Communion Sunday

A group of our children has been preparing to receive First Holy Communion over the last 9 months. They will receive the Blessed Sacrament for the first time at 11.30am Mass next Sunday. Please keep them and their families in your prayers in a special way this coming week. We are thankful, too, for Deacon Michael, Elaine Kelly and Monika Manser who so generously give of their time as catechists for the children and their parents.

June – the Month of the Sacred Heart

The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion which gained popularity after Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1670s, revealing to her the image of His Sacred Heart. It is a month dedicated to contemplating the wonderful mystery of the human heart of Jesus that contains all of God’s eternal, infinite, self-giving love for each person. In 2024, Pope Francis wrote an encyclical, Dilexit nos, on the human and divine love of the Heart of Jesus and its relevance for today. In this letter, he invites us to rediscover the importance of the heart, both in our spiritual life and in our human and social relationships. The Heart of Jesus is the perfect model of unconditional and total love, which calls us to live an authentic and full life, in communion with God and with others.

CAFOD Middle East Humanitarian Appeal

Following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, families are facing unimaginable hardship but, with your support CAFOD’s partners are continuing to support people affected across the region. In Lebanon, more than 1.2 million people have fled their homes, with over 3,000 killed and thousands more injured as strikes regularly hit the south, the Bekaa and Beirut, but also other areas in across the country. Thanks to your steadfast support, CAFOD has already sent £467,210 to its trusted partners in Lebanon, including Caritas Lebanon, who are providing urgent aid to families in crisis.

In the occupied Palestinian territory, the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, which began on 28 February, has had an immediate and significant impact on the humanitarian situation in the area. Elizabeth Funnell, CAFOD’s Middle East Programme representative, provided this update on 16 March: “Increased Israeli restrictions on the entry of people and goods into Gaza since the start of the war have caused severe shortages of basic essentials. CAFOD’s partners are continuing their work to provide healthcare, run community kitchens and provide mental health support but their work is hindered by a lack of fuel. In the West Bank, settler violence has spiralled and people are terrified. Our partner Caritas Jerusalem told us of how they ran twice today to find shelter from a missile attack – afterwards they sent a message: These moments are tense, sudden, and very real. We are still here, we are safe together. And we are back at work.” Please visit https://cafod.org.uk/give/donate-to-emergencies/middle-east-appeal if you would like to make a donation.
