Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers

What a wonderful celebration of First Holy Communion we had last weekend! A big thank you to all those who put so much into making it such a special day for our youngsters, their families and friends and for the parish community – the florists and church decorators, the singers and musicians, the welcomers and those who prepared the hall for the festivities afterwards. It was especially striking to see how the children where a representation of the rich diversity of our parish community, with families originating not only from this country, but also from other European countries, Asia, Africa and South America. We are truly a catholic Catholic community!

Most, if not all, exams are now passed, and schools and colleges are starting to prepare for the Summer break. However, there is still much going on in our schools. For example, alongside the usual round of teaching and learning, St John’s Starmakers, supported by a whole army of school staff and family members, will be putting on a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the New Hall in Tiverton this coming Thursday and Friday. Details can be found in the Newsletter, and it would be great to see many of you coming along to show your support for our children who have put an enormous amount of work into preparing for this week and to enjoy what is always an impressive and entertaining production.

We will be welcoming baby Archibald Chanter into the Church through the Sacrament of Baptism at the 11.30am Mass this Sunday. As we celebrate his rebirth as a child of God, we also rejoice in the new life which God continues to gift to our parish community. We remember in our prayers his parents, Emily and Tom and his godparents Hamish, Charlotte, Hope and Michael, who will have the special responsibility of nurturing him in faith and Christian living.

The Parish Laudato Si’ Group’s newsletter provides suggestions for things we might do during the Summer break closer to home rather than to the travel to more distant destinations, and thereby lessen the harmful impact on our environment.

There are a number of people who are unwell in the parish at this time and who are going through a time of worry and anxiety. May they experience the consolation and healing presence of the Holy Spirit through our prayer and concern for them.

God bless you all.

Canon Kristian
