NEWSLETTER

Eighteenth and Nineteenth Sundays in Ordinary Time (Year B)

Sundays 4th and 11th August

Please contact the parish to receive the newsletter by email each week.

Message from Canon Kristian

Dear brothers and sisters
As we are now in full holiday mode here in the South West and many things are in abeyance for the summer, the Newsletter this week will cover the next two weekends.  If there is a need to amend it for next weekend, I will send out an updated version together with the usual attachments.  Otherwise the Newsletter will remain the same. The parish diary covers the next two weeks.
We have the great joy of celebrating the baptisms of Edith and Ezra Pestaille this Sunday at the 10.00am Mass.  These occasions are always a blessing for our parish community.  It is inspiring to see the number of children, babies and young people amongst us!  A reminder that we are planning to have the Sacrament of Confirmation celebrated in our parish next year, so please do complete an application form for any of our young people, 14 years and older, who would like to take part in the preparation programme which will start after the summer.
Vonnie and Dave Westwick are also celebrating the Golden Jubilee of their Marriage at this time.  We rejoice together with them and assure them of our prayers and blessing. Ad multos annos!
Along with the Newsletter, I attach:
  • a guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel, offered by Monika Manser
  • no 127 of Inspire, from Deacon Peter
  • the application form for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Please keep in prayer those in the community who are sick, especially Teresa Cummings and Joe Xavier who are in hospital.  May they sense the healing and serene presence of God within them.
May God bless you all.

Prayer Intention for August

During the month of August, Pope Francis invites us to join him in praying for political leaders. We pray that political leaders be at the service of their own people, working for integral human development and for the common good, especially caring for the poor and those who have lost their
jobs. For a video of the Holy Father introducing this intention go to: www.popevideo.org.

Coffee Morning

The next Coffee Morning to raise funds for the internal fixtures of the rebuilt St James will take place next Saturday 10 August, 10.00am-12noon, hosted by Margaret and Sarah, at Stylehurst, Ashley, Tiverton, EX16 5PA. If you would like to host a Coffee Morning or other similar event (or to host another one, if you have already hosted one!), please have a word with either Margaret Found or Maggie Pulford.

CHAT – Become a Giver of Hope

At the recent AGM of CHAT, we heard about the magnificent work done by staff together with an army of volunteers to help people out of food poverty, to advocate for those with housing needs and to assist people to manage their debts. Sadly, there has been a significant rise in both food poverty and homelessness over the past year, and CHAT is dependent on having a steady stream of income in order to carry on its work on our behalf. They would particularly like people to become regular donors as Givers of Hope by setting up a Standing Order. The form to do this can be found here and is also available at church.

Laudato Si’ Group

The parish Laudato Si’ Group meets on the first Saturday of each month at 4.00pm in the Hall, including this Saturday, 3 August. It aims to reflect on the teaching of Pope Francis about our spiritual duty to care for the environment and to propose practical and concrete ways in which we can respond as a parish community. New members are always warmly welcome.

Confirmation 2025

Next year is a Confirmation year for the parish, so if there are any young people, aged 14 or over, who would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, please complete the attached form and return it to the Parish Office as soon as possible, so that we will be able to make plans to start the preparation programme in the Autumn.

St James and St Boniface Youth Club

The St James and St Boniface Youth Club meets every second Saturday between 11.00am-12.30pm at the hall at St Boniface. Young people from 9-14 years old are invited to come along and spend some time together, to play games, to chat and to eat cake! The next meeting is this Saturday 3 August.

The Friends of St James and St Boniface

The Friends of St James and St Boniface is a gathering of parishioners which aims to bring the community together for social events planned throughout the year. The primary purpose of these events is to strengthen the bonds of our belonging to each other, but they also sometimes generate much needed funds for the parish, so that we can provide for the needs of others and for our two church buildings. We are all “Friends” and it would be great to see some new faces at the meeting this Saturday, 3 August, in the hall.

Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady

The Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady, which falls on 15 August, is a Holy Day of Obligation, which means that we are all called to come together for Mass on that day. In order to enable as many people to get to Mass as possible there will be a Vigil Mass at St Boniface on Wednesday 14 August at 6.00pm and Mass at 10.00am and 6.00pm at St James on Thursday 15 August.

SVP Parish Skittles Evening

The SVP will be holding a parish skittles evening on Friday 30 August at the Racehorse Pub in Wellbrook Street, Tiverton, 7.00pm for 7.30pm start.

Diocesan Youth Rally

Join other young people from across the Diocese at St Rita’s in Honiton for the Youth Rally on Saturday 28 September 2024. There will be many activities for all to join in, including the obstacle course, penalty shoot-out and various inflatable activities. Young people from 6 – 16 years of age are welcome to form teams of 6. Teams can be formed on the day if a parish does not have six young people at the Rally. The suggested donation is £10 per person. For booking or further questions please contact, Saskia: youth@prcdtr.org.uk
