Message from Canon Kristian

Dear brothers and sisters
The greatest news for the diocese from last week was the appointment, at long last, of a new Bishop for our Diocese of Plymouth.  Bishop Nicholas Hudson is presently an Assistant (or Auxiliary) Bishop of the Diocese of Westminster, but he will become the Bishop of Plymouth when he is installed on his “cathedra” (the Bishop’s seat) in the Cathedral (hence the name!) next month on 29 November.  Bishop Nicholas chose that date because it is the feast day of St Cuthbert Mayne. Cuthbert was born in Youlton near Barnstaple in 1543 and went on to become the Rector of the parish of Huntshaw in the newly established Church of England in 1561. Whilst studying at the University of Oxford, he became a Catholic and soon went abroad, to Douai in France, to study to become a Catholic priest.  He was ordained a priest in 1575 and returned to the mission in England in April 1576, joining the household of Francis Tregian as a “steward” in Golden Manor, near Probus in Cornwall. He was discovered by the authorities during a raid on the Manor on 8 June 1577 and imprisoned in Launceston Castle.  Cuthbert was put on trial and found guilty of high treason.  He was hung, drawn and quartered in the market place in Launceston on 29 November 1577, the first of the “seminary priests” who trained abroad to be martyred at the time of the Protestant Reformation.  He was canonised as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales in 1970. Our church in Launceston is the National Shrine of St Cuthbert Mayne and well worth a visit.  As a place of pilgrimage, it is also one of the churches in our diocese which has a Holy Door for the Jubilee Year of Hope.  We can be rightly proud of the courage and fidelity of St Cuthbert Mayne and we ask his intercession for those same qualities for Bishop Nicholas as he takes on the mantle as the next Bishop of Plymouth.
Yesterday evening (Friday), we held our annual Harvest Supper, during which we pondered four questions as we look forward to the next year as a parish community and the return to our own church in Tiverton in mid-April 2026.  The four questions were:
  1. What words would you include in a Vision Statement for the parish?
  2. What would you like to see happen in the parish when the community moves back to the new St James?
  3. How could we reach out in welcome to all the people in the many new housing developments in the parish?
  4. What could we do to increase the unity of the parish community?
I will collate the responses and make them available to those who would like to see them.  At first glance, there appears to be a remarkable unity of vision in the answers given.  If anyone who was not at the Harvest Supper would like to offer their responses, please feel free to email them to me over the next few weeks.
The hall and the Harvest Supper were prepared beautifully by a good band of parishioners and a special thanks goes to them for all their efforts to make it a successful evening and to cater for over 50 people. The array of different cheeses was impressive (including some “Stinking Bishop” brought by me!) and everyone had their fill of food.  There was even some apple crumble left over.
The clocks go back one hour tonight, so you will get an extra hour in bed tomorrow morning.  If you forget to change your clocks, you will be turning up for Mass an hour early and wonder why no one else is there!  The changing of the hour does mark a definite change of season and a move out of Autumn and its celebration of the Harvest into the long, dark Winter months leading to the new life of Spring.
Together with the Newsletter this week, I attach the weekly guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel by Monika Manser and the latest number of Inspire from Deacon Peter.
Please remember in your prayers all those who are sick at this time in our parish community.  Your prayers for their healing are important. Pray also for those who have died recently, especially Joe Xavier and James Kay.
May God bless you with a serene and open heart.

Bishop-Elect of Plymouth

With joy we received the news last Tuesday that the Holy Father Pope Leo has appointed Bishop Nicholas Hudson, presently an Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Westminster, as the next Bishop of Plymouth. Bishop Nicholas will be installed as our Bishop in the Cathedral on 29 November, the Feast of St Cuthbert Mayne, the secondary patron of our diocese. Please do remember him in your prayers over the coming weeks as he prepares to take on this important and challenging service as our chief shepherd. The newsletter containing the announcement and more information about Bishop Nicholas can be found here.

Love in Action in the Holy Land – Catholic News Podcast

In a recent episode of the Catholic News podcast , with Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem and Fr Elias Tabban, Parish Priest of Zababdeh Parish, near Jenin, we hear about the happy, hopeful but also cautious mood on the ground among the people following the Gaza ceasefire agreement which marks the end of the war and the beginning of the first phase of the peace process in the Holy Land. Fr Elias shares the experiences of local families and the ways the war has affected their lives, including how the local Christian and Muslims communities have been moved to build bridges and work together to overcome the challenges they are facing. We learn how the parish is the heart of the community, serving as a school, pastoral centre and place of entertainment, prayer and solace, not just for Christians, but also for the wider community.
