Message from Canon Kristian

Dear brothers and sisters
Despite the fact that the signs of Christmas have already disappeared from most of the shops and from many people’s homes, we are still in the midst of the celebration of the Christmas Mystery as a Catholic Christian community.  Once more, this Sunday gives us another chance to hear the astonishing words of the Evangelist St John that: “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us“, and to reflect upon our firm belief that God chose to be born into our human world and to walk alongside us in both times of joy and celebration and in times of sadness and tragedy, sharing the highest highs and deepest lows of human reality and emotion.  The Christmas Season reaches its climax with two celebrations over the next eight days: the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord and the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.  The Epiphany, the proclamation of the universal gift of salvation in the Coming of Christ, which was the original “Christmas” celebration in the Early Church and remains so to this day in both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches of the East, is so important for us that it is a Holy Day of Obligation, a day when we are all required to gather and celebrate Mass.  As a result, there is a Vigil Mass at St Boniface on Monday 5 January at 6.00pm and Masses on 6 January in St Andrew’s at 9.00am and 7.00pm.  The Christmas Season concludes with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord next Sunday, the Christmas-Christ no longer seen as an infant but as an adult preparing fulfil his mission as the Messiah through his ministry and proclamation of the Reign of God, leading ultimately to his saving Sacrifice on the Cross and his Resurrection from the dead.  So, let us be counter-cultural and continue to celebrate the Christmas Season as fully as we can over these next eight days.
No doubt many of you will have made New Year Resolutions.  Along with all those resolutions relating to such things as eating more healthily, doing more exercise, and living more sustainably or more simply etc, hopefully there will be a resolution relating to the living out of your faith with greater integrity, such as fidelity to weekly Sunday Mass, greater participation in the life of the parish community in one specific way or another, a commitment to share something of my faith with those you meet, or a commitment to working practically for just and peace within our wider community.
During April/May of this year we will also be moving back to our new church building in Tiverton.  This will be a major event for our parish community, which will be marked by the solemn Dedication of the Church by Bishop Nicholas.  In my recent discussions with him, I made the proposal that the new church might be dedicated to both St James and St John, so as to recover the name and precious heritage of our parish relating to our original Church of St John in West Exe.  Bishop Nicholas was very happy with the proposal, not least because in a few year’s time the Catholic community in Tiverton will be celebrating its 200th anniversary and St John’s played a central role in this history.  It will also once again make a clear connection between our church and our school in Tiverton. Hopefully, this proposal also meets with your approval.  Feel free to share your views about this proposal with me.
Along with the Newsletter this weekend, I attach
  • the usual guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel from Monika Manser,
  • a New Year’s Message by Terence McCarthaigh from the Parish Palestinian Support Group
We remember in our prayers as always those who are sick and in particular need at this time.
May God bless you all and our world with peace during this coming year.

Prayer Intention for January

We are invited to join with Pope Leo in praying for his intention for January, which concerns prayer with the Word of God: “Let us pray that praying with the Word of God may be nourishment for our lives and a source of hope in our communities, helping us to build a more fraternal and missionary Church”.

Donations at the Crib

Please take time to visit the Crib in Church over the Christmas period.  All donations given there will go to the Catholic Children’s Society as it works across the Diocese spreading God’s love and giving families hope in times of crisis. The CCSP continues to ask you for a combination of concern, prayer and action.

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord falls this coming Tuesday, 6 January. As this is a Holy Day of Obligation, there will be a Vigil Mass in St Boniface on Monday 5 January at 6.00pm and Mass on the day itself at 9.00am and 7.00pm in St Andrew’s.

The group usually meets on the first Saturday of each month at 4.00pm in St Andrew’s Hall in Tiverton, but this month it will be meeting next Saturday, 10 January, same time, same place. Feel free to come along. New members are always very welcome.

Residential for Teens

A residential weekend for teens, aged 13-17, will take place from 23-25 January at East Shallowford Farm on Dartmoor focussed on the theme of “I was a stranger and you invited me in” (Matthew 25:35). The residential is designed to give young people a chance to step back from the busyness of daily life, explore their faith, enjoy fellowship with others their age, and take part in guided reflection, prayer, and activities. They will be invited to explore the lives of people holding refugee and asylum seekers status in the UK. Upon listening to their stories, the young people will be able to form their own opinions and to decide what action they should take. A contribution of £50 per person to assist with costs is requested. For further information, contact Saskia at youth@prcdtr.org.uk.
