Message from Canon Kristian
Dear brothers and sisters
We are now more than halfway through the Holy Season of Advent and about to enter its final days which focus more specifically on Christ’s taking-on of our human nature at the Incarnation in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. This event in human history was the fulfilment of God’s ancient promises and of the centuries of longing for the Messiah by our ancestors in faith. These centuries of longing are beautifully expressed in the “O” Antiphons sung at Evening Prayer (Vespers) of the Divine Office in the week leading up to Christmas. The very letter “O” , when spoken, evokes a sense of longing and yearning, and, in its written form, demarcates a space which is open and waiting to be filled. This “O” is followed by one of the many different ways in which the yearning for this Messiah took specific form in the centuries before the Nativity, giving us insights into our own understanding of the birth of Christ, the Messiah (or the Anointed One), into our world. Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ amongst us, the only One who can fully satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart.
Before arriving at the days of the “O” Antiphons, we mark the passage of more than half of the Advent Season with Gaudete Sunday – Rejoice Sunday. Joy is – or at least should be – a characteristic of the Christian disciple, something often remarked upon in the Letters of St Paul. The bursting of the light of Christ into the darkened world over two millennia ago was heralded as “news of great joy” by the angels to the shepherds, and the same message remains “news of great joy” in the darkened world of our own days. Christ was and is a light that the darkness cannot overcome, however deep the darkness might be within us or out in the world around us. So, we are reminded that whether celebrating the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, or deepening our awareness of the abiding presence of Christ in the present moment, or looking forward to the coming of Christ at the fulfilment of the Plan of Salvation at the end of time, we are called to approach this with joy (and never with fear) at a personal level and as bearers of the Gospel of joy for others.
Please take note of the various Carol Services and other events in preparation for Christmas contained in the Newsletter. As always at this time of year often marked by excess in our society, there are reminders to remember those in great need, whether in our own community or farther afield, particularly in the Holy Land.
Along with this weekend’s Newsletter, there is:
Monika Manser’s guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel
the latest number of Inspire from Deacon Peter
the Advent edition of the Parish Laudato Si’ Group Newsletter
the end of term Newsletter from St John’s School.
Please remember those in our parish community who are in hospital or who are gravely ill at this time, as well as Baby Brodie, whose funeral will take place this week at St Andrew’s, and his grieving family.
May God bless you all in these last days of Advent.

The “O” Antiphons leading up to Christmas
T he Roman Church has been singing the “O” Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from 17-23 December. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfilment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative “Come!” embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of Nations) and O Emmanuel (O God-with-us).
Advent Reflection Group
Join Monika Manser at 7 Blundell’s Avenue after 9.00am Mass each Tuesday in Advent to reflect on the daily meditations in the book “Advent and Christmas Wisdom” by Henri J.M Nouwen? The book is published by Redemptorist Publications and is readily available from various on-line bookshops.
Tree of Hope for CHAT
We are hosting a CHAT Tree of Hope in the narthex at St Andrew’s. Each tag on the tree contains the option of either making a financial donation or purchasing a specific item to be dropped off at CHAT, who will ensure it goes to people in need in the community. Choose a tag and either donate on your own behalf or perhaps as a thoughtful gift for that person who seems to have everything and then present them with the tag so that they can see the impact of the contribution made on their behalf.

Friends of the Holy Land Christmas Appeal
This Christmas, there will be no celebrations in Bethlehem once again. Without tourism, Bethlehem’s lifeblood which supports 80% of the population, unemployment has surged. With the borders closed, there is no option to seek work in Israel. Prices have skyrocketed, residents are traumatised by the constant fear and anxiety for the future, while their daily lives are restricted by checkpoints and roadblocks.
This brutal war has already claimed over 700 lives in the West Bank and devastated countless others. Parents have run out of words to comfort their children as their loved ones perish in neighbouring Gaza, barely 50 miles away. Nearly every family has lost someone. Yet, the Friends of the holy Land have not lost hope, and neither should you. Over the past year, FHL have seen hope shine more brightly than ever through the Christian community in the West Bank. Though they number around 45,000, less than 1% of the population, the impact they make is remarkable.
