Message from Canon Kristian

Dear brothers and sisters
Summer is in full-flow in the South West as we welcome the many visitors to our area and diocese.  A good number of our parishioners will be off on their holidays too, visiting places and people home and abroad.  So our weekly congregations will be looking a bit different over these next few weekends, with both new faces and missing faces.  We pray that those who are on their holidays will find it a time of relaxation and enjoyment, enabling them to return home feeling restored in body, mind and spirit.  As always, we will also extend the warmest of welcomes to those who will be joining us for Mass, celebrating that we all belong to one and the same family when we gather as the Body of Christ.
On the parish life front, August is usually a “quiet” month as a result of these comings and goings.  However, you will read in the Newsletter of a new initiative being proposed by a group of our parishioners with regards to solidarity and support for Palestinian Christians in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank and for people in those areas more generally at this time of heightened suffering and violence.  Following on my covering email a couple of weekends ago, when I made reference to the Statement made by the Latin Patriarchate in the Holy Land and the Ecumenical Statement by the Heads of the Churches in the Holy Land, taken together with the constant flow of news and pictures reporting the continuing destruction and suffering in Gaza, no one can underestimate the importance of the global Christian family’s prayer and practical support and action for the suffering people living in the Lands of the Bible.  Even at the recitation of the Angelus in St Peter’s Square last Sunday, in the wake of a week in which the world had seen images of skeletal children filling hospital wards in Gaza due to food shipments being kept far below starvation rations causing deaths, particularly of the most vulnerable, to rise rapidly, our Holy Father Pope Leo said: “I am following with deep concern the extremely grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the civilian population is being crushed by hunger and continues to be exposed to violence and death. I renew my heartfelt appeal for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the full respect for international law”, noting that “every human being has an intrinsic dignity bestowed by God himself“, and urging all parties in every conflict to recognise this dignity and to cease all actions that violate it.  The Pope encouraged negotiations toward a future of peace for all peoples and the rejection of anything that could compromise it, and entrusted to Mary, Queen of Peace, “the innocent victims of conflicts and the leaders who have the power to bring them to an end.”  I encourage those who can to attend the meeting that has been arranged for 12 August in St Andrew’s Hall in Tiverton.
Along with this weekend’s Newsletter, I attach the usual guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel, faithfully offered to us each week by Monika Manser, the latest edition of Deacon Peter’s Inspire and a flyer from Jane Trott regarding CAFOD’s Summer “Cancel the Debt” Campaign.
Congratulations to Bill and Val Kelly who are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary these week.
Please remember in your prayers those who are very ill and frail at this time, particularly Joe Xavier, Dave Westwick and, Alan, Shelagh Eastwood’s brother, including also the family and friends who love and care for them.  We hold in prayer, too, those who have died recently, especially Vicky Jones.
May God bless you all

Solidarity and Support for Palestinian Christians in the Middle East

The lands of Palestine are the cradle of Christianity, sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Gospel” and the Christian Palestinians as the “living stones”, their persistent existence going back to the days of Jesus walking that very ground. In 1949 some 10% of the population was Christian, today it is less than 2% and declining.

A number of parishioners wish to start a project (along with other local Christians) to demonstrate solidarity and support for Palestinian Christians in the Middle East. This has become increasingly important these past two years with War and Famine in Gaza and increasing violence in the occupied territories.

To this end and as part of a wider support to all the victims of violence in the area, these parishioners are calling a meeting on 12 August at 7.45pm (for 8.00pm) in St Andrew’s Hall to pilot a Tiverton and district wide project aiming to respond both practically and politically to the famine, war and violence across the Palestinian territories as a small local endeavour contributing towards the eventual establishment of Peace with Justice for all Israelis and Palestinians.

Do please come along if you can. If you are interested in becoming more involved and helping with the meeting, please speak to Sally Chapman, Bridget Tosh, Carol or Terence McCarthaigh (t.mccarthaigh@btinternet.com).

Updating the Parish Database

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, it is necessary for us to ensure that the data the parish holds on our parishioners is up to date. We therefore need to ask each person/family to fill out a new census form at regular intervals. It has been some years since the parish database was last updated, so new census forms are available over the next few weekends. Many of you have already returned your forms. Could those who have yet to return theirs please do so as soon as possible. There are additional forms available for those who still need to take one. If you know of anyone who does not attend church regularly, but who would still like to be included on the database, please take a form for them to complete and return.

CAFOD’s Summer “Cancel the Debt” Campaign

This Jubilee year, CAFOD is asking us to consider the plight of countries saddled with unbearable debt by banks and their wealthy neighbours. Whilst there are so many problems in the world at the moment, we can feel powerless to help those in need, but this is your chance to make a difference. Jane Trott has produced a useful flyer, attached to the Newsletter, which gives directions about how you can participate in this campaign.
