Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time  (Year C)

Sea Sunday

Sunday 13th  July, 2025

Please contact the parish to receive the newsletter by email each week.

Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers,
What a celebration it was last weekend, as 24 of our children and young people made the First Holy Communion!  Despite attempts to spread the number over two Masses, on Sunday morning St Andrew’s church was crammed to capacity with parishioners, family and friends.  The whole weekend was truly a living expression of the catholicity and universality of the Church. Thank you once again to all those involved in the catechetical preparation, the decoration of the church and the preparation of the cake and gifts afterwards.  A particular thank you goes to one of our Polish parishioners, Krzysztof Halon, who donated a specially baked loaf of bread topped with a cross for each of our new Communicants. Not only was it a thoughtful gift for our children and young people, but more than one of them had made a start on eating it before they went home!
The Gospel at Mass this weekend is the well-known parable of the Good Samaritan.  This is one of the parables we find only in the Gospel of Luke and contains many of those themes l listed last weekend which are so specific to St Luke.  It is a parable that we become familiar with from our earliest days but, like with many things that become second nature, we can convince ourselves that we know it so well that we no longer really listen to it.  The familiar words of the story simply flow over us.  However, the implications of this teaching of Jesus are truly revolutionary, not only because it highlights the hypocritical and misguided actions of the “professionally religious” – the priest and the Levite – and overturns deeply held religious practice concerning ritual cleanliness, but it smashes through the wall of centuries of religious division and bigotry by placing the Samaritan – the outsider, the heretic, the one “who does not belong” – centre stage as the embodiment of divine compassion and inclusivity.  In a world where much of our politics and social outlook is conditioned by the making of distinctions of who is “one of us” and who “isn’t one of us”, with the consequent decisions to “walk by on the other side” when confronted with the wounded bodies of those lying at the side of today’s “roads”, this teaching of Jesus responding the to question “Who is my neighbour?” is as revolutionary and as counter-cultural today as it has ever been.  It is also a clarion call to people of religious faith, like ourselves, that the embrace of God is always far wider and open than our all-too-human attempts to narrow and control who’s in and who isn’t.  In the reading from his letter to the Colossians this weekend, St Paul sets before us this “bigger picture”, the universal and expansive mission of Christ, by reminding us that “in him (Christ Jesus) all things hold together…For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross”. May our parish community always be motivated by this bigger vision!
This week also marked a key moment in the rebuilding of St James, with the erection of the framework for the spire!  Great progress is being made on the completion of the roof and soon the building will be once again weather-proof.
Along with this weekend’s Newsletter, I attach:
  • the weekly guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel, from Monika Manser
  • the latest edition of Inspire, from Deacon Peter
  • a guide with the details of the Pilgrimage of Hope Route from Tiverton to Crediton, from the Laudato Si’ Group
  • the latest news for the Catholic Children’s Society
Please remember in your prayers as always the sick and vulnerable of our community, particularly during this time of increasing heat.  Congratulations to Fr Paul who celebrates the anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood this coming Monday. I am sure you will all have a special prayer for him that day too.
May God bless you all.

Sea Sunday

Seafarers and fishers play a vital role in all of our lives, but they often work in difficult, hazardous conditions. This Sunday is Sea Sunday. It is the day when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Your support will make a big difference to seafarers and fishers in need. You can donate via the retiring collection in church, by visiting www.stellamaris.org.uk/donate, or by texting ‘SEA’ to 70460 to donate £5. This collection is vital to enable Stella Maris to continue its important work, so please give generously. Thank you. A video which gives examples of the work of Stella Maris to help seafarers can be found at https://youtu.be/V3vuH5AL0AM.

Young Adults’ Holy Year Pilgrimage to Rome

A small representative band of young adults from our diocese will be making a Holy Year Pilgrimage to Rome at the end of this month. Karol Gorlo from our own parish will be a part of this group. He is appealing for support in helping him cover some of pilgrimage cost of £1,300. Please contact Canon Kristian if you would like to help Karol or speak to Karol directly.

Diocesan Vacancy – Safeguarding Case Worker: Victim Support

The Diocese is recruiting a Safeguarding Caseworker to work within the Diocesan Safeguarding Team reporting to the Head of Safeguarding. The main purpose of this role is to provide dedicated support to victims and survivors of abuse. The role requires the person to work with individuals and groups, identifying needs and ensuring that the people we work with remain safe and empowered. The postholder will be responsible for positively promoting a high-quality safeguarding service, in particular reaching out to victims and survivors.

If you have relevant professional experience gained with working with a victims’ charity or in a role such as IDVA or ISVA, together with the ability to act as a key representative for the Diocese of Plymouth, the Diocese would like to hear from you. The post is 3 days, 21 hours per week, located at St Boniface House, Ashburton.

To apply, please send an email to recruitment@prcdtr.org.uk to obtain an application form and job description. Applications are by covering letter and application form. The closing date is Monday 28 July 2025.

Pretty Muddy Race for Life for Cancer Research UK

Our parishioner, Ewelina Zychlinska, is taking part in the Exeter Pretty Muddy Race for Life next Saturday, 19 July, to raise money for Cancer Research UK. If you would like to donate to her fundraiser, please go to this link.

Updating the Parish Database

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, it is necessary for us to ensure that the data the parish holds on our parishioners is up to date. We therefore need to ask each person/family to fill out a new census form at regular intervals. It has been some years since the parish database was last updated, so new census forms are available over the next few weekends. Many of you have already returned your forms. Could those who have yet to return theirs please do so as soon as possible. There are additional forms available for those who still need to take one. If you know of anyone who does not attend church regularly, but who would still like to be included on the database, please take a form for them to complete and return.

Message from the Laudato Si’ Group

We reflect with so much gratitude and joy on the pilgrimage walk from Tiverton to Crediton on 24 June. We are grateful to the many people who made it possible, to the people who walked with us some or all of the way, to those who provided welcome rest and refreshment at each stage of the walk, and to those who joined our Pilgrim Mass of celebration in Crediton. We were blessed to be able to honour Pope Francis’ invitation, walking the beautiful mid-Devon countryside in joy and as pilgrims in the footsteps of St Boniface. There are plans already to try and do a parish pilgrimage in June next year and perhaps annually, if this is something people would like to do.

Unbound: Freedom in Christ Prayer Conference

Negative thoughts, repetitive sins and unhealthy relationships? Destructive habits, idols, and false identities? Resentments and bitter wounds that never seem to heal? What if you could reach out and touch God’s love and never be the same? Unbound is a non-confrontational freedom and inner healing ministry which helps people worldwide reclaim their true identity in Christ.

Trained ministry teams will be on site. Author and co-founder, Matt Lozano, will be speaking live from the USA. The conference will include Mass, Confessions, Adoration, praise and worship and refreshments. Tickets are £40 via the link below. Booking essential as tickets will not be available on the door. Over 18’s only. For more details, please contact 01752 701660 or 07940 453607/ Book your ticket at https://givealittle.co/c/5dBfepB2Akl3YpEkxi3Qr1/.
