Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
As the liturgy of the First Sunday of Lent always focuses on Jesus’ time in the wilderness, inviting us to go to that desert-place within ourselves where we come face to face with the reality of who we are and who God is calling us to be, the Second Sunday of Lent raises our eyes to the Mountain of Transfiguration.  There, the chosen disciples get a glimpse of who Christ really is and the future glory which awaits us, to be kept before our eyes as we navigate the challenges and suffering of our own lives.  Just as Christ was transfigured, and the new life of Resurrection followed the pain of the Cross, so we are called to open ourselves ever more fully to the transforming grace of God as we move forward on the journey of life.  The steps that we take this Lent – our prayer, our fasting and our giving to the poor, together with our desire to turn back to God and the ways of God through repentance, forgiveness and conversion – are but a microcosm of the life-long journey each of us has of co-operating with the grace of God, so that we may become fully the person we were created and are still being called to be.  This Sunday is a moment of encouragement, just as it was for the apostles, to come down from the mountain and move forward, allowing grace to continue to change and transform us, in the knowledge that, even though there will be times when we will have to walk through the valley of the shadow of death (cf Psalm 22(23):4), Christ’s presence never leaves us and is always at work within us leading us to the fullness of life.

An important part of this journey of transformation in Lent is the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession).  Due to the internal layout of both St Andrew’s and St Boniface, it is difficult to schedule times for Confession.  However, apart from the usual time on Fridays between 11.30am and the 12noon Mass, if you would like to celebrate the Sacrament, please do let me know and a suitable arrangement can be made.  In addition, you will read in the Newsletter that, on Friday 28 March, we will be joining in the worldwide Jubilee event of 24 Hours for the Lord with a Vigil at St Andrew’s, Tiverton, from 6-9pm.  During that period of prayer and adoration, there will also be the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance individually for those who wish.

Those who have ordered Sunday Missals (the Weekday Missal is not available until the end of April) can collect them this weekend.  The price is £18.95 and can be paid in cash or via the Contactless machine.

Along with the Newsletter this week, I attach:
  • the guide from Monika Manser to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel
  • the weekly Lent Newsletter from our CAFOD Group
  • the Caritas Jubilee Newsletter on Forgiveness
  • the March Newsletter from The Lighthouse Christian Book and Cafe in Tiverton
The news from Rome concerning the Holy Father’s health seems to be more positive this weekend and suggests that he is now on the long road of recovery.  We continue to keep him in prayer, as we do all those in our parish who are sick at this time.  Kathleen Holmes’ funeral will take place this coming Friday, so let us comment her soul to God and pray that Ron and the family may be consoled in their grief.
May God bless you with a fruitful Lenten Season

Pope’s Prayer Intention for March

During the month of March, our Holy Father Pope Francis invites us to join with him in praying for families in crisis: “Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure of their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences”. To watch a video of Pope Francis introducing this prayer intention and to find more information about it, please go to https://thepopevideo.org/march-for-families-in-crisis/.

CAFOD Lent Family Fast Day Appeal

CAFOD’s Family Fast Day took place last Friday, 14 March. Please return your envelope with your donation this weekend. Your donation will enable CAFOD to provide practical help to people affected by war, poverty and climate change so they can build hope for the future. Alternatively, you can donate by calling 0303 303 3030 or online at www.cafod.org/envelope.

Laudato Si’ Snowdrops

The parish Laudato Si’ Group has some snowdrops ‘in the green’ for parishioners to take after this weekend’s Masses as mentioned in their most recent newsletter. They seem to be a fitting gift in this Jubilee Pilgrimage Year. It is hoped that they will naturalise in local gardens as little symbols of hope to gladden hearts over the next few months.

24 Hours for the Lord- “You are my hope” (Psalm 71:5)

As part of the Jubilee Year of Hope, Pope Francis has asked that a special time of vigil take place over the period of 28/29 March, leading up to the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday. As a celebration of the Mercy of God – the core of the Gospel message, this vigil will start with a Penitential Liturgy followed by Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, with the opportunity to celebrate individual Sacramental Confession and Reconciliation for those who wish. Whilst it is the expectation that, in large urban parishes, this vigil should last 24 hours, in parishes such as ours the period of time will naturally be shorter. Therefore, our Vigil will take place on Friday 28 March, 6.00-9.00pm.

Handbell Concert and Cream Tea

Next Saturday 22 March, at 2.30pm in St Andrew’s, Tiverton, there will be a Handbell Concert by Poole-based quartet, Clapper Chaos. Between them they play a set of 41 bells and a two-octave set of 25 hand chimes. All their arrangements are unique, and you will not hear them played by any other group! This will be followed by a Cream Tea in the Hall. Tickets for the event are on sale at church now, £10.00 each. The proceeds will be shared equally between the communities of St Andrew’s and St James’.

Parish Social and Fundraising Events

An updated list of upcoming parish social and fundraising events is attached to the Newsletter. A date for your diaries: Parish Spring Bingo, a fun family event, is planned for Friday 11 April, 7.00-9-00pm. In St Andrew’s Hall. The Friends of St James and St Boniface are requesting donations for this event: luxury Easter Eggs for Bingo prizes; wine, chocolate or new items for the Raffle. Please leave them in the basket in the narthex at St Andrew’s.
