Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
As we enter the final days of Advent, our liturgical focus moves towards the unique role played by Our Lady in the plan of salvation.  We are inspired by the beauty and courageousness of Mary’s openness as she welcomes and acts upon the will of God for her, and the excitement and joy which leads her to climb up into the hill country of Judea to celebrate with her elderly relative, Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist, and to care for her for six months.  The depth of humanity and love expressed in these actions not only lead us to venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary in a special way, but it is an affirmation for all of us that we too are capable of, and called to, a similar unconditional openness to the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and to offer our lives in joyful loving service and mission. As we approach the Feast of the Nativity of the Lord and the arrival of a new civil year, let us ask God to gift us with a willingness and fidelity to receive and live the word of God like Mary’s.  With her let us say: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) and, if and when we doubt ourselves and our ability, let us remember the reassuring words of the Angel Gabriel: “…nothing will be impossible for God” (Luke 1:37).
The Jubilee Year of Hope begins on Christmas Eve, when Pope Francis will open the Holy Door in St Peter’s in Rome.  I have given links in the Newsletter to the Pope’s Letter which sets out the basis for calling this Holy Year 2025 a Jubilee of Hope.  I have ordered booklets for everyone with more information and guidance regarding the Holy Year which I had hoped would arrive in time for the official opening.  However, it does not look like they will now arrive before Christmas, but they will be made available to you as soon as I have them.  We are all called to go on pilgrimage in some way during this Holy Year and to be Pilgrims of Hope to the world.  This pilgrimage is not only outwards and physical, but also inwards and spiritual, and so all of us, whoever we are, are invited to set off on a journey, perhaps to an unknown destination!  Just as the Lord said to Abraham, the Lord also says to each of us: “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you” (Genesis 12:1).   Hopefully, over these next 12 months, we can also make a part of that journey together as a parish community.
Please take careful note of the times of the Christmas Masses which you will find in the Newsletter, in particular that the Night Mass of Christmas will be at 9.00pm on Christmas Eve and not at midnight, since our friends at St Andrew’s have their service at that time.  Also, the Christmas Day Mass at St Andrew’s will be at 11.00am, not at 11.30am, to enable people to get back home for their Christmas Dinners half an hour earlier.  It will be a very tight turn around time for me to get from St Boniface back to St Andrew’s, but I will do my best to be on time!
Along with the Newsletter I attach the usual guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel, offered to us by Monika Manser.
As always, please keep in your prayers those who are sick and in hospital at this time, together with those who have died recently, particularly Baby Brodie, Janet Robson and Jean Fitz-Costa.  I am sure we are also all praying for those who were killed and injured in the attack on the Christmas Market in Magdeburg in Germany yesterday.  How our world still needs to hear the message of the Christmas Angels of peace on earth and goodwill amongst all people!
May the celebration of the Coming of the Prince of Peace fill us all with the blessings we need.
I wish you all a blessed and happy Christmas went it arrives!

The “O” Antiphons leading up to Christmas

T he Roman Church has been singing the “O” Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfilment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative “Come!” embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of Nations) and O Emmanuel (O God-with-us).

Christmas Get-Together at St Boniface

The annual Christmas Get-Together in St Boniface Hall will take place this Saturday, 21 December, 2.00-4.00pm. Finger food will be on offer and some desserts too. If they can, people are asked to bring a plate of food along to share. Carols will be sung, and “Goody bags” and selection boxes will be given to the children.

Parish Carol Service

Our Carol Service involving the communities of St James, St Boniface and St Andrew will take place at 7.30pm this Saturday, 21 December, at St Andrew’s. Please do come along as part of your preparation for Christmas.

Advent Reflection Group

Join Monika Manser for the last time at 7 Blundell’s Avenue at 9.30am on Tuesday to reflect on the daily meditations in the book “Advent and Christmas Wisdom” by Henri J.M Nouwen?

Tree of Hope for CHAT

There is a CHAT Tree of Hope in the narthex at St Andrew’s. Each tag on the tree contains the option of either making a financial donation or purchasing a specific item to be dropped off at CHAT, who will ensure it goes to people in need in the community. Choose a tag and either donate on your own behalf or perhaps as a thoughtful gift for that person who seems to have everything and then present them with the tag so that they can see the impact of the contribution made on their behalf.

Holy Jubilee Year 2025 – “Pilgrims of Hope”

T he 2025 Jubilee will officially open this Tuesday, 24 December, at 6.00pm UK time, with the rite of the Opening of the Holy Door of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter by Pope Francis, who will then preside over the celebration of the Night Mass of the Lord’s Birth inside the Basilica. The Jubilee Year offers a special moment for conversion and grace to rekindle hope in the daily journey of life and the proclamation of the Gospel. The Pope’s Bull of Indiction, “Hope does not disappoint”, proclaiming the Jubilee Year can be read here and the Opening of the Holy Door and other events can be followed on the Vatican News and Vatican Radio YouTube channel and Facebook Live.

Friends of the Holy Land Christmas Appeal

This Christmas, there will be no celebrations in Bethlehem – AGAIN. Without tourism, Bethlehem’s lifeblood which supports 80% of the population, unemployment has surged. With the borders closed, there is no option to seek work in Israel. Prices have skyrocketed, residents are traumatised by the constant fear and anxiety for the future while their daily lives are restricted by checkpoints and roadblocks.

This brutal war has already claimed over 700 lives in the West Bank and devastated countless others. Parents have run out of words to comfort their children as their loved ones perish in neighbouring Gaza, barely 50 miles away. Nearly every family has lost someone. Yet, over the past year, we have seen hope shine more brightly than ever through the Christian community in the West Bank. Though they number around 45,000, less than 1% of the population, the impact they make is remarkable. You can donate at https://www.friendsoftheholyland.org.uk/donate/christmas.
