NEWSLETTER

First Sunday of Advent  (Year A)

Sunday 30th November, 2025

Please contact the parish to receive the newsletter by email each week.

Message from Canon Kristian

Dear brothers and sisters

My apologies for the delayed arrival of this weekend’s Newsletter but, as you know, the Mass of Installation of Bishop Nicholas Hudson as our bishop took place in the Cathedral in Plymouth this afternoon. It was a joy to be gathered together with Bishop Nicholas’ family and friends, representatives from all our parish communities, priests and deacons from our diocese and the Archdioceses of Westminster and Southwark, many of the bishops of England and Wales and representatives from a number of Christian denominations and other faiths for this unique occasion. Hopefully, many of you were also able to join online. As a member of the Cathedral Chapter of Canons, I have been down in Plymouth since yesterday afternoon, when the weekend’s celebrations for Bishop Nicholas were started off by the singing of Solemn Vespers, beautifully led by the choir from Buckfast Abbey. What an appropriate way for us, as a diocesan Church, to start this new Year of the Church by welcoming a new shepherd to lead us on this next stage of our journey!

This First Sunday of Advent shares much of the focus of the last couple of Sundays, focussed as they were on the Coming of Christ at the end of time. Before we turn our minds back in the latter part of Advent to the Incarnation of God in Jesus the Christ in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, we continue to look forward in hope to the coming of the new heavens and the new earth in the Kingdom of God, scanning the horizons of life for signs of the Lord’s return in triumph.

After celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation with 17 of our teenagers last Sunday – and what a deeply moving and encouraging occasion that was for our parish community, this Sunday we will be celebrating yet another sign of new life with the Baptism during the 11.30am Mass of baby Jacob Green. Please keep him and his family in your prayers this weekend in a special way.

In addition to the weekly guide by Monika Manser to a contemplative reading of the Sunday Gospel, attached to the newsletter there is a poster advertising an Advent retreat from women taking place in Convent in Lynton and an appeal poster from the Community of Our Lady of Walsingham. We already know that Monika’s weekly prayer guides have a diffusion across the country and even amongst those belonging to other Christian traditions but, this week, we received an email all the way from a Catholic group from The Philippines, letting us know that they translate the guide each week into Tagalog and asking for their thanks to be passed on to Monika. So, our parish of St James and St Boniface has a reach far beyond the shores of this island!

May this Advent be a time of ever-deepening awareness of manifold ways in which Christ comes into our world and into our lives.

God bless

Canon Kristian
