Third Sunday in Lent (Year B)

Sunday 3rd March 2024

Please contact the parish to receive the newsletter by email each week.

Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
As we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent, I hope you are having a graced and fruitful observance of the sacred time in preparation for the Solemnities of Holy Week and Easter.  In this Sunday’s readings, as Jesus cleanses the Temple, upturning all tables of commerce which are distorting the relationship between God and God’s people, he proclaims that he himself is the Temple of Presence of God, who will rise again after his passion and death.  Moreover, no building or place, however sacred, can contain or circumscribe that Divine Presence.  The Divine Presence resides within each one of us, and Lent is a precious time to undertake that inner journey to rediscover and honour that Presence not only within ourselves but within those around us, particularly the poor and marginalised.   The Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are tried and tested tools to enable us to do this.
Along with the Newsletter this weekend, I attach:
  • the guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel offered by Monika Manser
  • the latest number of Inspire from Deacon Peter
  • Lent CAFOD News 3 from our CAFOD reps
  • the recent Newsletter from our parish school, St John’s
Please remember in your prayers those who are sick, particularly those who are in hospital, as well as those who are housebound or in residential care.  The weekend and next, Anne and Tony Doble will be helping our children and young people make cards after Mass to give to the residents of Orchard Lea Residential Home in Cullompton.  This is a simple but effective way of bridging the generations and letting those in Homes know that they are not forgotten.
God bless
Canon Kristian

March Prayer Intention
We are invited to join with Pope Francis in praying during the month of March for the new martyrs of the faith: “Let us pray that those who risk their lives for the Gospel in various parts of world might imbue the Church with their courage and missionary drive”. To hear the Holy Father introduce this intention himself, go to www.popevideo.org.

Easter Cards for Orchard Lea Residential Home
This Sunday after the 11.30am Mass at St Boniface our children and young people are invited to make Easter Cards for the residents of Orchard Lea. The children and young people in St James will be invited to do the same after the 10.00am Mass next Sunday, 10 March.

“At the Supper of the Lamb” – A Commentary on the Mass
Canon Kristian will be leading a weekly session looking at the different parts of the Mass. The remaining dates are as follows: Tuesday 5 March – The Offertory and Eucharistic Prayer, Wednesday 13 March – The Communion Rite, and Wednesday 20 March – The Concluding Rites. The sessions will take place at 7.00pm in the Hall.

Catholic Children’s Society – Sporting Bundle Prize
The Catholic Children’s Society (Plymouth) has teamed up with three local sporting clubs and grounds to offer a one wonderful prize for one lucky
winner. The lucky winner will receive the following sporting bundle:

• EXETER RACECOURSE – 2 complimentary tickets for a race day of your choice in the 2023/24 season.
Please visit https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/a-sporting-bundle to purchase tickets: £10 for one entry or buy two entries for £20 and receive a third entry for free. Alternatively scan this QR code to be taken directly to our Crowdfunding Prize Draw page. All proceeds raised from the prize draw will enable CCSP to continue to support families of all faiths and none living in our Diocese.

Diocesan Lenten Offerings
Individuals from around the Diocese are producing weekly “Lenten Offerings” – prayers and reflections – to help nourish, inspire, support and uplift us on our spiritual journey. The link for the Third Sunday of Lent is: https://email.workwithgusto.co.uk/t/t0655178B860C7B022540EF23F30FEDED.

Safeguarding our Children at Church

In order to safeguard our children whilst at church, parents are asked to ensure that any child under the age of 12 is always accompanied by a trusted adult if they need to leave the church during Mass to go to the toilet or into the hall/entrance area.

“Tough Times” Support Group
A new “Tough Times” support group is starting in the parish to provide a safe space to share, vent and find solace in navigating life’s storms. It will provide a friendly space to find strength in shared experiences and in the comforting embrace of our faith. We are not alone; we can walk this journey together, leaning on the hope found in Christ. The group will meet on the last Tuesday of every month at 7.00pm in the hall at St Boniface in Cullompton, starting on 26 March.

Health and Safety at St James
It has been great to see St James full to capacity for the Sunday morning Mass over recent weeks. In order to ensure that there is room for everyone
and that the aisles are kept clear, please stow bags and other items under your pew rather than in the aisle or on the pew itself and, if possible, could
those with young children leave any buggies and strollers in the hall.

St Patrick’s Day Afternoon Tea
To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, we will be holding a Celebrational Afternoon Tea on Sunday 17 March in the Hall at 3.00pm. There is a list at the entrance to the church for those who would be willing to help make cakes for this special occasion. The Tea will also include some Irish songs/music and some storytelling. It would be lovely to see many of our parishioners, families and children there. If you would like to come, please put your name down on the list provided so that we will have an idea of how many to cater for.

Easter Draw and “Name the Easter Bunny”
The tickets for the Easter Draw are on sale, £1 ticket. Donations of Easter Eggs, chocolates, biscuits and bottles would be greatly appreciated. Please
leave them at the entrance to church. We are also fortunate to have another 1kg chocolate Lindt Easter Bunny donated to the parish to help with our fundraising for the new church in Tiverton. Guess the name of the bunny, which Canon Kristian has selected from the list available, £1 a name!

200 Club
Canon Kristian will make the draw for March after the 6.00pm Mass this weekend. If you are not a member of this parish fundraising initiative, please consider joining. Please speak to Simon Coombs or Sheelagh Bourdon at St James and to Teresa Cummings at St Boniface.

The CAFOD Big Lent Walk
This Lent CAFOD is calling all Catholics who can to walk 200km in 40 days to help fight global poverty. Walk when and where you choose over 40 days, alone or with friends. Sign up today and CAFOD will send you a welcome pack with a wallchart and a pair of ‘Big Lent Walk’ laces.
