Message from Canon Kristian
Dear sisters and brothers
The Sunday Liturgy’s focus on the call continues this weekend with the calling of the first disciples. Their willingness to respond and their courage to leave all behind to follow the Lord is a constant reminder to all of us of the commitment involved in following the Lord as we do the same on a daily basis.
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity concludes this Sunday. Hopefully, you have managed to keep this important intention in your prayer throughout the week since Christian Unity is not a “add-on” to Catholic life, but something which is integral to the effectiveness of the proclamation of the Gospel. Just think how much more powerful and marked by greater integrity the Christian message would be if the Christian family spoke with one, unified voice! As Jesus himself says in the Gospel of St John: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
This Tuesday is the annual Holocaust Memorial Day. As the generation which suffered so profoundly during the Holocaust in the Second World War dies out, the importance of “remembering” becomes ever more vital, not only to keep the memory of these people alive, but to keep us vigilant so that genocide in all its form is never acceptable in a truly human society. There have been attempts at genocide since the Holocaust, there are still attempts at genocide in our own times and there will be attempts at genocide in future generations, so it is our moral duty to keep the flame of memory burning brightly. One way in which we do this is by “Bridging Generations”, the theme for this year’s HMD. Taking the title from the religious world of pagan Rome, the Pope also carries the name of “Supreme Pontiff”. “Pontiff” means “bridge-builder”, since the purpose of the Church and her ministers is to be a “bridge-builder” between God and the world, between the spiritual and the material. Each of us in our own place and in our own way is called to be a bridge-builder, not only “vertically”, uniting our everyday world with God, but also “horizontally”, across generations, bringing individuals and peoples together. This week, then, let us take seriously our call to be bridge-builders.
It looks as if Saturday 21 February is the favourite day for events to be taking place in the diocese! Three of them are included in the Newsletter: the Diocesan Day on the Pope’s recent Apostolic Exhortation on the Love of the Poor, the Workshop for Conversations in the Spirit in Exeter and the Lent Day Retreat in Honiton. Sadly, none of us can go to all three, but maybe there is one which you will feel called to take part in.
By way of advance information, the Requiem Mass for Ruby Whitton will take place in St Boniface on Tuesday 3 February at 12.30pm and the Requiem Mass for Bridget Beales will take place in St Andrew’s on Thursday 5 February at 11.30am. May they both rest in peace.
Along with the Newsletter this weekend, I attach:
the weekly guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel, from Monika Manser
the latest issue of Inspire, from Deacon Peter
the Information Leaflet for the “Gather” conference in March
the application form for the Lent Day Retreat in St Rita’s in Honiton.
We are being somewhat battered by stormy winds and heavy rainfall at the moment, so I do hope that everyone is safe and that houses and gardens are not being too impacted by this challenging weather. Please keep all our sick and vulnerable people in your prayers, together with those who have died recently.
God bless
Canon Kristian

Holocaust Memorial Day
This Tuesday, 27 January, is Holocaust Memorial Day, with the theme Bridging Generations, which highlights the crucial role of the next generation in preserving the memory of the Holocaust and carrying it forward. It highlights the power of intergenerational dialogue – of listening to those who came before us and of sharing those stories with those who come after. In doing so, we don’t just preserve memory – we connect it to the present. Genocide doesn’t discriminate by age: infants, children, adults and the elderly have all experienced unimaginable suffering in different ways. In many cases, entire family lines were erased. Bridging Generations invites us to honour each life – and honour those who left no family to carry their legacy – whose legacies live on not through bloodlines but through books, films and other interpretations.
On Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember. We remember the horrific events that destroyed countless lives. We remember the unimaginable suffering and heartache. We remember so that we may truly be formed by what has happened.
