NEWSLETTER

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)

Annual Day for Life

Sunday 16th June, 2024

Please contact the parish to receive the newsletter by email each week.

Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
This is a weekend of great joy for us as we celebrate the First Holy Communion of 16 of our children from across the parish at St James and the baptism of baby Gabriel Hird at St Boniface. There will be celebrations in the hall after both events!  It is always edifying to see the young lives of our parish community grow and flourish not just physically but also spiritually.  A special ‘thank you’ goes to our parents and catechists who do so much to foster the faith lives of our youngsters.  We also have a growing number of altar servers in the parish and our young people often take their turn in proclaiming the word of God and playing instruments/singing at Mass.  These are all signs of growth and life of which we should be thankful.
This Sunday is always the Day of Life in the Church in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which focuses this year on the ever-growing important area in society of the care for those who are at the end of life.  Our faith has a very strong message about the dignity and value of all human life from conception until natural death, and the appropriate care and treatment of the sick and dying is a vital and key aspect of a truly moral society.  Please read the pamphlet produced by the three Bishops’ Conferences of these islands for further insight, and a reminder that there will be a retiring collection to support the work of the Church in this essential debate at national level.
You will also see in the Newsletter that there are two job vacancies in the diocese at the moment, one of which is for a new parish secretary here at St James and St Boniface.  This advert is being shared in the surrounding parishes, but obviously it is open also to anyone with the appropriate skills in our own parish!
Along with the Newsletter, I attach:
  • the weekly guide from Monika Manser to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel
  • Inspire no.119 from Deacon Peter
  • the Message for the Day for Life 2024
  • adverts for two diocesan vacancies
  • the Catholic Children’s Society Parish Representative Information Pack
  • the latest newsletter from St John’s School
Please pray as always for those in the parish who are sick, dying or in any need.  This weekend is also Fathers’ Day, so we celebrate and pray for all fathers – birth fathers, stepfathers and spiritual fathers!
God bless
Canon Kristian

First Holy Communions 2024 and a Baptism!

This Sunday at the 10.00am Mass 16 children will be making their First Holy Communion. Do please keep them and their families in your prayers in a special way. The Mass at St Boniface will begin later than usual at 12noon and will include the baptism of baby Gabriel Hird.

Day for Life

The annual Day for Life is celebrated this Sunday. The theme this year is The Lord is my Shepherd – Compassion and Hope at the End of Life. A debate on end-of-life issues has been in the headlines in recent months with calls for assisted suicide being expressed, especially by celebrities, a view that opposes the Catholic view that life is a gift and that we are called to care for others at the end of their lives. Day for Life is marked on the same day by the three Bishops’ Conferences of England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Bishops hope that parishes will be able to prepare to promote the Catholic view of life as a gift and the importance of care at the end of life by reading the resource produced this year containing the Message from the three Lead Bishops and from a hospital chaplain, together with some prayers. There will be a retiring collection to support the Church’s work in promoting the culture of life.
