Message from Canon Kristian

Dear brothers and sisters
The readings of the Mass this weekend are a reminder that a part of our Lenten discipline is that we take the time to undertake an honest appraisal of our lives, with regards to our relationship to God, our relationship to those around us and our relationship to “things” or the created world.  This serious examination of conscience should lead us to see the need to repent – to rethink, to think more deeply, to change direction – in different areas of our life and to seek the grace of forgiveness. In this way, like the fig tree in this Sunday’s gospel, we are given the chance to produce the fruit that each of us is invited to produce by God, which finds its source in our baptism when we became the daughters and sons of God.  This immense dignity demands a certain approach to being and living in our world, one based on the teaching and ministry of Jesus, and it is our fidelity to this Way of Christ that the Season of Lent offers us the opportunity to examine each year so that we can grow and mature as disciples.
As part of the worldwide initiative “24 Hours for the Lord” in the Jubilee Year of Hope, this coming Friday 28 March we will be holding a vigil at St Andrew’s Church, from 6.00-9.00pm.  This vigil will begin with a service of penance, followed by a time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, uniting our community to the wave of prayer across the world.  During this time of adoration, Fr Paul and I will be available for the individual celebration of the Sacrament of Penance for those who wish.

This week we received the sad news that George Hamilton, our oldest parishioner, has died just a few months sort of his 105th birthday!  George was a remarkable individual, who remained bright and engaged almost to the end of his time with us, with a great sense of humour!  For those who saw him at an occasional Saturday evening Mass, walking down the aisle with only the aid of a stroller, he was a great example of fidelity.  His funeral will take place back in his native Glasgow.  Let us keep him and his family in our prayers in a special way at this time.  May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Our joint fundraising event with St Andrew’s takes place today at St Andrew’s, Tiverton, at 2.30pm.  The event will start with a unique handbell and hand chime performance in the church by Clapper Chaos from Taunton and end with a delicious Cream Tea in the church hall.  It would be great to see many of our community present.  Tickets, which cost £10, can be purchased at the door.  The proceeds of the event will be divided between our parish and St Andrew’s.

Along with the Newsletter this weekend, I attach:
  • the guide to a contemplative reading of this Sunday’s Gospel from Monika Manse
  • the latest edition of Inspire from Deacon Peter
  • the advert for the Post of Head of Caritas Diocese of Plymouth
  • the latest Lifepath Tiverton Prayer Letter
As always, I commend to your prayers those who are sick or in need, and those who have died recently.
May you all be blessed with an abundance of faith, hope and love as you journey through Lent.

Pope’s Prayer Intention for March

During the month of March, our Holy Father Pope Francis invites us to join with him in praying for families in crisis: “Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure of their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences”. To watch a video of Pope Francis introducing this prayer intention and to find more information about it, please go to https://thepopevideo.org/march-for-families-in-crisis/.

24 Hours for the Lord- “You are my hope” (Psalm 71:5)

As part of the Jubilee Year of Hope, Pope Francis has asked that a special time of vigil take place over the period of 28/29 March, leading up to the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday. As a celebration of the Mercy of God – the core of then Gospel message, this vigil will start with a Penitential Liturgy followed by Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, with the opportunity to celebrate individual Sacramental Confession and Reconciliation for those who wish. Whilst it is the expectation that, in large urban parishes, this vigil should last 24 hours, in parishes such as ours the period of time will naturally be shorter. Therefore, our Vigil will take place this coming Friday 28 March, 6.00-9.00pm.

This year, CHAT has also produced Lenten Reflections based on the main Sunday Gospel readings for the Season of Lent.

Diocesan Vacancy – Head of Caritas Diocese of Plymouth

The Head of Caritas Diocese of Plymouth plays a pivotal role in advancing the Church’s “Ministry of Charity” by leading social action initiatives that align with the Bishop’s vision. The role involves implementing strategic priorities in response to the evolving needs of the community, especially for people in vulnerable situations in our local communities including children, those who are older, people who are homeless or those seeking asylum or refuge. This is a hands-on role and the person must have a delivery-focussed attitude. The post is located at St Boniface House, Ashburton, Devon, but involves travel throughout the Diocese. The post is a permanent, full-time position, 35 hours per week with a salary of £45,000-£50,000 p.a. depending on experience. The closing date for applications is Sunday 27 April 2025.
