Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers
This Sunday brings to a close the Season of Christmas.  The celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is the third and final event commemorating the birth and manifestation of Christ to the world.  Jesus the Christ, now an adult, rises up out of the waters of the Jordan and his mission as the Son of God starts to unfold.  Just as our ancestors in the faith, the Israelites, were commanded in the Shema to listen: “Hear, O Israel…” (Deuteronomy 6:4), so too those who desire to follow Christ – the Messiah, the Anointed One – are invited to “…listen to him” (Luke 9:35).  The willingness and ability to be receptive to the voice of God speaking to us and within us in manifold ways is fundamental to the Christian spiritual pathway and to faithful discipleship.  As we move into the short period of weeks before the beginning of Lent (called “Weeks in Ordinary Time”), we begin to listen to that voice speaking to us through the particular view-point of the Gospel of St Luke.
An important initiative for the Year of Jubilee in our diocese began this week with the issuing of Pilgrim of Hope Passports, which relate to the four places of pilgrimage which have been established within our own diocese.  More information about this is contained in one of the attachments to the Newsletter.  On a local level, we hope to organise a parish pilgrimage to at least our local pilgrimage church in Crediton but, when the weather improves, we might also organise a pilgrimage walk from St Andrew’s to the old St John’s church in Tiverton, via St James, and, for the more robust among us, a pilgrimage walk from St James in Tiverton to St Boniface in Cullompton. Do let me know if you have any additional thoughts about this aspect of the Jubilee Year.  Each of our diocesan schools, including St John’s, is being invited to plan a suitable pilgrimage walk for their pupils too.
On Saturday of this coming week, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins.  Sadly, because the ecumenical focus in Tiverton and Cullompton is now mainly aimed at the period between Ascension and Pentecost, there is little by way of ecumenical activity during this week in our area.  However, I am attaching the daily prayer materials produced for this year’s Week of Prayer, which are inspired by the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea from which one of our Catholic creeds that we use each Sunday originates.  If you can, please do incorporate these daily prayer materials into your own prayers between 18 and 25 January.
Just as we have had the first session of the preparation for the First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion today, we will be holding the first session of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation this coming Thursday, 16 January, at 7.00pm in St Boniface’s Hall, Cullompton. It is essential that those who have enrolled on the preparation program take part in these monthly meetings.
Along with the Newsletter this week, I attach:
  • the weekly guide to a prayerful reading of the Sunday Gospel, offered by Monika Manser
  • the January Newsletter from our Parish Laudato Si’ Group
  • the daily prayer materials for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
  • information about the start of the Jubilee Year of Hope and becoming Pilgrims of Hope
  • information from Caritas Diocese of Plymouth about forthcoming events
  • the advert for the diocesan post of Head of Safeguarding
As ever, do please remember to hold in prayer those who are seriously ill and vulnerable, particularly in this period of colder weather, those suffering throughout our world, particularly on account of war or the impact of climate change, together with those who have died recently in our parish – Brodie, Janet, Jean and Ryan.
May God bless you and yours,
Canon Kristian

Holy Jubilee Year 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope Passports

In this Jubilee Year – a special year of forgiveness and reconciliation, in which people are invited to come back into right relationship with God, with one another, and with all of creation, our Diocese has launched a new Pilgrims of Hope Passport inviting pilgrims to visit four historically and spiritually significant churches in Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset: the Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Boniface, Plymouth, is a place central to the heart of our Diocese; the Church of St Cuthbert Mayne, Launceston, holds the relics of the first martyred Catholic Seminary Priest of the English Reformation; the Church of the Holy Trinity, Dorchester has a strong connection to the Chideock Martyrs, and the Church of St Boniface, Crediton, contains two relics of the Saint who was the bringer of the Catholic Faith to the people of Germany and of Holland.

These Pilgrims of Hope Passports are available at church today and can be stamped at each of the four churches named above.  All are encouraged to visit these sacred sites as part of an organised pilgrimage or by creating their own pilgrimage routes and walks.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025

The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity runs from 18 – 25 January. The materials have been provided by the Ecumenical Monastic Community of Bose in Italy, entitled “Do you believe this?”, and are inspired the 1700th anniversary of the great Council of Nicaea held in 325 which attempted to clarify the fundamental beliefs of the Church and produced one of the Creeds we still use today. The daily prayer materials are attached to the Newsletter.

Diocesan Yearbooks 2025

The new Diocesan Yearbook, containing information about the diocese, its structures and personnel and about our parishes, is now on sale at the back of church, £4.00 a copy.

Confirmation Preparation

The first session of preparation to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation will take place this coming Thursday, 16 January, at 7.00pm in St Boniface’s Hall, Cullompton.

Jean Fitz-Costa RIP

The Funeral Service for Jean Fitz-Costa RIP will take place this Tuesday, 14 January, at 9.30am at St Andrew’s. As a result, there will not be a 9.00am that day. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for her family at this difficult time.

Readers at Mass Wanted!

We need more volunteers to exercise the ministry of reader at all of our weekend Masses. This is a really important service to offer to the community. If you would be interested in becoming a reader, please have a word with Canon Kristian.

200 Club

Canon Kristian will make the draw for January after the 6.00pm Mass this Saturday.  We really need more parishioners to join this on-going fund raiser. If you would like to join for as little as £1 a month, please let Simon Coombs or Sheelagh Bourdon know at St Andrew’s or Siobhan Gilroy at St Boniface. Those parishioners at St Andrew’s who pay their annual subscription at this time of year are reminded to do so. You can either pay on the Sum-up machine or by giving cash in an envelope to Simon or Sheelagh.

The Parish Rosary Group Prayer Board

Our Rosary Group, which prays the Rosary after Mass on Fridays and which is always welcoming of new members, is keen to include as many people in their prayers as possible. In order to do this, they have created a special board which will be at the weekend Masses. Anyone who knows of someone in need of prayer – of whatever faith or none – can add their name to it. The Rosary Group looks forward to seeing many names added to it. The members of the Rosary Group will have the board with them when they meet to pray each week, so that those whose names are on it can be included in their prayers.
