Message from Canon Kristian

Dear sisters and brothers

Please find attached the Newsletter for this weekend, together with:

  • the weekly guide to assist prayerful contemplation on the Sunday gospel from Monika Manser
  • the latest edition of Inspire from Deacon Peter
  • the Obituary for Bishop Emeritus Christopher Budd RIP written by Fr Mark Skelton, the Parish Priest of Teignmouth, Dawlish and Shaldon.

On Friday of this coming week, the Great Big Diocesan Quiz to raise funds for the Catholic Children’s Society (Plymouth) takes place.  We have had a great response from our parish and so those 12 teams who have registered to take part in the Quiz are asked to be at the Hall in St James at 7.00pm so that the Quiz can start promptly at 7.30pm.  It is really important that we start on time, since the Quiz is being coordinated across the Diocese.  The questions have to be asked at the same time in those parishes that are taking part and a review of the half-time scores will take place.  Tea, coffee, biscuits and cake will be provided, but participants are asked to bring their own beer, wine and soft drinks to sustain them throughout the Quiz! It should be a great evening.  It promises to be an enjoyable evening and, hopefully, we will also raise a good amount of money for the Catholic Children’s Society.

Next Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, especially to the ordained ministry and to the consecrated life.  We are only too aware in our diocese of the need for more priests to sustain the sacramental and pastoral life of our parishes.  We are fortunate to have a number of seminarians training for Ordination, but this does cost a considerable sum of money over the six years of seminary. Therefore, there will be a retiring collection at the end of all Masses to support our Seminarians Fund.  Envelopes will be available for those who can gift aid their donations.  The recurrence of the Day reminds us of the importance of praying for vocations to the priesthood and for those who are already in priestly ministry, and so a Holy Hour will be held at St James at 4.00pm next Sunday to give a focus to this prayer.

As ever, please remember in your prayers those in our parish who are living with serious illness and those who have died recently.

With the assurance of my prayers for you all

God bless

Canon Kristian

Caritas Diocese of Plymouth’s Annual Review

The vision of Caritas Diocese of Plymouth is: ‘To live the Gospel by following Christ’s command to love our neighbour as He loved us’. Its annual review (https://heyzine.com/flip-book/1b4e58a4d0.html) sets out its work across the Diocese in 2022 and the plans for 2023.  Caritas supports the network of charities, schools and parishes to help those who are poor, vulnerable and marginalised. Its work is informed by Catholic Social Teaching (CST) inspired by the Gospels and the words of Jesus Christ. Its focus is on education and formation; encouraging and supporting parishes and schools to reach out with those in difficult circumstances including children and families, those who are elderly, isolated or vulnerable, refugees and migrants and those who are homeless. It works closely with and through existing Catholic and other partner charities. SVPStella Maris and CCS(P) are part of its managing committee and help guides its path.  If you have any questions, would like to get more involved or would like support in developing local projects, please get in touch at caritas@prcdtr.org.uk  or on 01364 645421.

Success of “Operation New Warm Clothes”

Our appeal for new, warm clothing has now come to an end. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our churches, and the CHAT staff were so glad to be able to distribute the clothes among many local families. Just yesterday, a mother and her two children had fled domestic violence and CHAT was able to give her some essential items until she can access her belongings. Thank you everyone for your amazing support!
