Diocese of Plymouth, St James Church, Tiverton

Today: Sunday 4 in Ordinary Time (B)

Parish Mass Book: page 132

This weekend we are keeping Homeless Sunday

Sunday is the anniversary of the ordination of Bishop Mark in 2014

Saturday is Holocaust Memorial Day

Homeless Sunday

Homeless Sunday is the opportunity to pray, reflect and plan practical action on homelessness, to offer solidarity and be a voice for change. Visit: www.housingjustice.org.uk

I have asked Ali Padfield, Hub manager of  CHAT, to speak about this growing problem at Masses at St James and St Boniface this weekend. Fr Paul.

  • Our church, as you know, along with others churches in Tiverton, supports CHAT. As we prepare to build a new church it’s all the more urgent that we support people with housing issues in Mid Devon.

Unwanted Gifts Sale – at St James

Thank you to those of you looking for a home for the jumper or socks you will never wear and items you will never use – for bringing them to church to sell and raise money for the New Church Building Fund!

Sale in the hall before and after Mass this weekend.

Palms for Ashes

Lent is fast approaching! Ash Wednesday is on 14 February and last year’s palm crosses are needed to burn for the ashes blessed and imposed on that day. If you still have and can find old palm crosses please don’t throw them away but bring them to church and leave them in the appropriate basket marked  ‘palms for ashes’

Epiphany Extravaganza Concert

The proceeds from ticket sales and donations for the cakes and charities raised an amazing total of £683 – to be shared between the New Church Building Fund and the charity Young Minds (supporting mental health among young people).

On behalf of all the delighted audience and consumers, I’d like to thank the performers, young and not so young (who all of course gave their talents free), the organisers (especially Bridget the amazing conductor), the ladies who served teas, and the donors and bakers of delicious cakes which were either eaten before or purchased after the concert, adding to the general satisfaction, not least of the children!   Fr Paul.

Candlemas Day

Friday this week 2nd February is the feast of the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple, when Simeon and Anna recognised the child as the ‘Light to enlighten the nations’.

Blessing of Candles and Procession at the 12.00 midday Mass at St James    Parish Mass Book: page 295

Safeguarding: Free training online

All of us who are involved in helping children at church have a responsibility to do that to the best of our ability. But it is not always easy to attend a day’s training, sometimes far away.

The  Catholic Trust has made  available a package of e-learning programmes, FREE online. They can be done in the comfort of your own home, as and when it suits you, as quickly or slowly as you like.

Leaflets explaining how to access the this resource are available on request.
