Palms for Ashes

Ash Wednesday is on 14 February and last year’s palm crosses are needed to burn for the ashes blessed and imposed on that day. If you still have and can find old palm crosses please don’t throw them away but bring them to church and leave them in the appropriate basket marked  ‘palms for ashes’

New Church Project: progress report

Our architects – Trewin Design – are currently arranging for statutory investigations and reports on the state of the site including: Flood Risk assessment, Tree survey, Ecology (including possibly protected bats and other species), Ground contamination (relating to former adjacent railway and industrial use), Drainage and soak-away…..

Thankfully we have recently received some substantial anonymous donations, which will contribute noticeably to the costs of this initial outlay – towards what someone has called Fr Paul’s vanity project! (really?).

Divine Renovation:

  • One small initial step has been the new and improved Sign of Peace at Mass. The response has been (surprisingly) enthusiastic. Don’t let the enthusiasm grow cold. Move out of your place, smile and greet someone you don’t know.

  • Soon we shall be having another Name Tag Sunday.

  • After Easter we shall be introducing the Alpha Course. You will be hearing a lot more about this over the coming weeks.

200 Club

The draw for February will take place after the 6.00pm mass on Saturday. Subs for March will be collected at both masses next weekend. New members always welcome. Please speak to either Sheelagh Bourdon or Simon Coombs.

Lourdes Pilgrimage Collection

Next weekend is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Lourdes is of course a place of healing. Bishop Mark has asked us to contribute to the Lourdes fund. This is to help very ill people, who couldn’t otherwise afford it, to join the pilgrimage to seek healing of body, soul and spirit, under Our Lady’s protection.

Please spare what you can and give to the retiring collection

News from St John’s School

This week has been a busy one at St John’s; Year 4 led the school in a liturgy of prayers and hymns to celebrate Candlemas. The whole school made a small donation to come dressed in numbers and took part in all sorts of maths activities to mark NSPCC Number Day and we were also joined by parents to try some of the new food choices available for the children’s lunches.
